Joint Occupational Health and Safety Committee Basics

Joint Occupational Health and Safety committees (JOHSC) are the cornerstone of effective occupational health and safety (OHS) programs. They facilitate members’ rights to participate collaboratively with the employer in eliminating and reducing the risk of occupational injury and disease. JOHSC are legally mandated by the Workers Compensation Act and are a provision of our collective agreements.

This course combines both theory and practical activities to assist learners in understanding and applying the principles of OHS. Topics covered include OHS law and worker rights, JOHSC representative role and responsibilities, inspections, investigations, and committee procedures.

The purpose of JOHSC education is to create consistent practice for representative work, support building collaborative committees that work effectively to improve health and safety outcomes in the workplace.

Course Format

This course includes:

• Live session: Virtual or in person session designed for interactive learning.
• Downloadable online resources: Practical tools and reference materials to help participants implement what they've learned and share knowledge with their coworkers.

There is no pre-course preparation. All materials are provided as references for use during and after the live session.

Course Requirements

This course is open to BCNU membership; however, preference will be given to JOHSC Representatives.

Note: Course applications open four months prior to course start, and close 6 weeks prior to course start to allow Members time to request union leave. 

Salary Reimbursement
